Times are hard, so it’s even more important when choosing a printer for your small business or home office that you get the most bang for your buck – and which won’t take up too much space. This is the thinking behind the Brother MFC-7460DN, a compact four-in-one mono laser multifunction printer that puts speed and quality at the top of its agenda.

Stylish design
Driver Brother MFC-7460DN Windows 8/7/XPUnlike most models in this class, Brother has avoided going for the standard square or rectangular shape and instead opted for a more graceful Y-shaped design, complete with some useful built-in hand grips on the side for easy transportation.

Clad in conventional low-key jet black and measuring a tidy 405x399x316mm, the MFC-7460DN weighs a reassuringly sturdy 11.6 kg. At the top is an Auto Document Feeder that holds 35 sheets of A4, and in the base is a surprisingly large and easy to manoeuvre input tray for up to 250 sheets. Should you only need to copy the odd document or envelope at a time, there’s an additional manual slot hiding behind a drop-down panel at the front. The paper output try is limited to 100 sheets, which should be sufficient for most small business needs.

Taking control
The printer’s main control panel is fixed at around 45 degrees and relies on a two-line, 16-character LCD for most of its operations. The number pad for the fax is on the far right, and there are quick start buttons for Fax, Scan and Copy.

All the menus are easy to follow and scroll through but unfortunately there’s no LCD brightness option (although you can improve the display’s contrast), which it could certainly do with in dim conditions.

There’s also no USB port for flash cards, nor any form of memory card slots – and while you can connect to a network via an Ethernet cable to a server or via USB to your PC, there’s no Wi-Fi connectivity.

Print performance
You’ll be delighted to know, however, that there is an auto-duplex facility, which manages a decent speed of 12 ppm for text documents. Non-duplex printing and copying is equally impressive, averaging 24 ppm at 300, 600 and 1200dpi settings.

Black text quality is universally good when printing – even at the draft’ level – although graphics and images come out a lot darker when copying. Brother bundles PaperPort as its scanning software, and while it manages black text scanning and colour photos without issue, it had problems recognising some colour images in mixed black-and-white and colour documents.

Multiple destinations are available for scanning. The MFC-7460DN can send scans directly to e-mail, image, OCR, file, Server and I-Fax – and while the basic toner has a 1,200 page life cycle, a higher yield 2,600 page version is also on offer which will significantly reduce costs.
